Re-establishing an old Brooks tradition

Written by Harry Taylor from England 1/30/2012

I have had many saddles over the years. Tried a Brooks Swift last year and it broke in well and was extremely comfortable. Decided to try the B17 Titanium. Well from the initial ride it is very comfortable. Do not know if it is the titanium rails or the saddle. My posterior just seems to fit this saddle. Looks as if no breakin period will be required. Thats what I call a result. Thank you Brooks.

Seeing some of the posts re break in etc..I rode 996 miles in 10 days a year ago on a "gell" saddle..it was horrible..in contact with all the wrong parts of my anatomy..I've since brought a B17..sure it's hard to start..but long term..after it softens a little, believe me over distance it's the saddle I'll be using in future..I'm even considering putting a flyer on my 6kg carbon bike...

This applies to the Select: very fine materials!

This applies to all B17, and by extension, Brooks saddles: on my second ride with the B17, I forgot about the new saddle. It did its duty, and was comfortable ever after.

I want it.

More of a general comment on the service received concerning a new saddle that turned out to be defective - the problem was resolved extremely well by Brooks who definitely went "above and beyond" duty's call. Gold Standard!
The replacement saddle has had its maiden run and is perfect.
Very satisified.

Just bought my wife a b17 for christmas, how long does it take to break in, & what is the best break in technique ? Look fwd to you response & help. Thank you. Doug

A> Hi Doug, the best way to break the saddle in is to ride it frequently!

I am having a problem with my B17 ladies saddle in so much as it stains my clothing. I have used the proofhide on it from time to time, but I think the black colour must come out of it as the seat of my trousers, after riding the bike for a while, turns grey.

I have had the saddle for 3 years now and do not want to change it as I have broken it in nicely, but do need a solution. Do you have one? (apart from wearing black trousers all the time!!!)

A> All leather saddles (including the ones made by our competitors) stain light clothing over time.  The best solution is to use a saddle cover when wearing light trousers.  This is also the reason that cycling shorts traditionally are black, btw.

Had mine for about a year. Ride about 30 miles a week. There has been no appreciable softening of this seat!! After 5 miles I am standing on the pedals to relive the discomfort.
It is like sitting on a 1/2" piece of steel. Can't image why these saddles are so highly rated. I think perhaps it isn't that the saddle softens; I think after time the saddle simply kills all the nerves in your posterior. :)

A> Have you tried using Proofide to help break the saddle in?
